Chapter 9

Dennis Moore was a good-looking man with light brown hair trimmed close on the sides and back, the top gelled into a swoosh that looked like it was one smoldering look from toppling into a sexy curl on his forehead. Not that the tax attorney was sending any smoldering looks my way, but from the careful cut of his clothing, the meticulous nature of his grooming, and the faint waft of expensive cologne, I got the impression that Dennis fancied himself to be a lady’s man.

“Now, Mrs. Carrera.” He clasped his hands and placed them on his desk, giving me a smile that was probably intended to be charming but came across as oily and self-absorbed. “What can I do to help you? Are you facing an audit? Or perhaps you need assistance in negotiating payment of back taxes?”

I might have had my share of financial woes but thank goodness I didn’t have any tax problems. I hesitated, uncertain whether to concoct a lie or not. I wasn’t sure how lying about a tax problem would lead to my getting any answers about this man’s connection with Stacy Mellomaker, so I opted for brutal honesty instead.

I was pretty sure Stacy wouldn’t have lied to Brenda about her affair with this man, and besides that, he was completely her type from what I could tell. Attractive. Powerful. Smooth. He exuded both wealth and the sort of professional business acumen that I assumed had attracted Stacy to Gus. The only differences were that this man was not fifty years older than Stacy, and that he was probably far less wealthy than Gus. And he was married, while Gus had been a widow and available.

“Did you know Stacy before she married Gus?” I asked, trying to feel my way around the less personal questions before I got to the ones that would most likely get me thrown out of the man’s office.

“No, I don’t think so. I believe I first met her at a New Year’s Eve party, but I don’t recall if she was married to Gus at the time or not.”

“And when was the last time you saw her?”

He hesitated. “What exactly are you investigating? I heard that Stacy had died the other day. It was a complete shock to me, as I’m sure it was to her friends and family. She was young and always seemed to be in the peak of health. Does this have something to
